Yes, furnaces and boilers can qualify for a tax credit.
How much: | 30% of the cost (including installation/labor costs), up to $1,500 |
Timing: | Tax credit in effect in 2009 and 2010. Must be installed in your “principal residence” between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. |
Details: | Natural Gas or Propane Furnaces – AFUE of 95 or greater
Oil Furnaces – AFUE of 90 or greater (AFUE= Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) Gas, Propane, or Oil Hot Water Boilers – AFUE of 90 or greater |
Find qualified models: | There isn’t a single, comprehensive, list of heating products that are eligible for the tax credit. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) lists their member products that are qualified (below), but because AHRI membership is required, there are some products that are eligible not on the AHRI list. Some additional qualified products are on the ENERGY STAR lists.

How to apply: | File Tax Form 5695 with your tax return.
You must have a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement to qualify. There are 3 types of water heaters covered by the tax credit.
